SoO OC- Wex 'n' Jules

My OC design for Serpents of Old by ... complete with this lengthy and poorly written backstory XD

Name: Wexel, aka "Wex"

Age: 35

Height: 6' 3"

Species: Serpent

Occupation: blacksmith/handyman

    Wex was born just outside of the White City, where his father worked as a well-to-do stonemason and sculptor. When he was five a disease swept through the village and ended up claiming his father's life, so his mother, Fayar, took him to live with her older brother, Carther, who was a blacksmith in the Capital. Wex was always good with his hands, so he helped around the shop and later attended Umbra sect training alongside Merek. Initially, Wex and Merek were friendly rivals always trying to one-up each other, but soon became good friends. 
    Once Merek became team lead, Wex transferred to his group and happily served as his sort of righthand man. When Merek got suspended by the Council, he had to do his best to hold things together under the command of Cassius, a self-centered, arrogant officer who cared little for the wellbeing of his men. While looking to impress his superiors, Cassius led the group (without backup) to investigate a breach in the wall, where they found a pair of baliaths terrorizing a small village near the border. Cassius was quick to abandon ship when they were attacked, but Wex and the rest of the men stayed behind to do their job. Several of the sect members were injured by the time they took down the first creature, and only Wex and one other were left standing against the second. They finally managed to kill it, but Wex was badly hurt and spent months recuperating, never regaining full use of his right leg. He was given an honorable discharge and took advantage of the Council's appreciation to get rid of Cassius and put in a good word for his former officer.
    Merek was always really guilty about the whole ordeal, but Wex never blamed him (although he won't say no to a free beer every now and then). Once he recovered he began working for his uncle and became a skilled blacksmith, making weapons for the Umbra and doing odd repair jobs around town. He married the love of his life, Kasha, when he was 25, and the pair moved out to Merek's village so Wex could set up his own business. He was overjoyed when Kasha became pregnant, but it turned into desperation when she died during childbirth and he was left to raise his baby daughter, Jules, on his own. He refused to part with her no matter what, and, with Merek's help, kept her from being registered so that she would not be sent away to the island school when she got older. 
    Jules is now six (and a half) and continues to be the center of his world. Wex teaches her himself and loves to quiz her on spelling while he hammers out a new sword (she is equally as enthusiastic about doing her daddy's hair). Jules pretty much worships Wex and enjoys helping out where she can. She also hates to make him mad, but still manages to get into trouble every once in awhile. She then makes conciliatory gifts such as the rock necklace that Wex never takes off…

    Wex is always really easygoing, soft-spoken, quick to smile, and a general do-gooder who is loyal to his friends. He isn't too ambitious (just does his best) and doesn't like to be in trouble, trying to not tread on any toes whenever possible. He does, however, have a stubborn streak and is extremely protective of those he cares about, and won't let rules (or burly men with shiny weapons) stand in the way of doing what he thinks is necessary. He thinks Hizruk is a good kid and trusts Merek's judgement, but won't outwardly voice his opinions if he can help it. 

    (Jules thinks Merek is the coolest, and extends that title to his nephew)
